PSI and ACPE Sign Memorandum of Understanding to Advance the Quality of Global Pharmacy Education

October 03, 2013

Chicago, IL (October 3, 2013) – The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) is pleased to announce the establishment of a formal memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI) to cooperate and collaborate on activities and initiatives to advance the quality of pharmacy education internationally.

The organisations will engage in ongoing communication and information-exchange regarding educational quality criteria, policies and procedures, and other operational tools and resources. Leaders within both organisations also may observe site visits and study each other’s quality assurance systems and processes.

PSI President, Eoghan Hanly, stated: “The Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland is pleased to announce this memorandum of understanding with the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, which marks the first such agreement the ACPE, an established American body in this field, has entered into with an organisation from an EU country. The request for a formal arrangement, initiated by the ACPE–which has over 80 years’ experience advancing the quality of pharmacy education internationally–with the PSI is clear recognition of the recent progress made in this area in Ireland. It is also extremely timely as the PSI moves into the next phase of our pharmacy education reform initiatives, including the introduction of the five-year integrated pharmacy degree and the operational commencement of the Irish Institute of Pharmacy. This memorandum of understanding allows for the sharing of resources and knowledge as well as ensuring an effective relationship that meets each organisation’s aims and objectives. It will facilitate excellence in international and Irish pharmacy education to ultimately support better patient safety and outcomes.”

Mike Rouse, BPharm (Hons), MPS, ACPE Assistant Executive Director, Professional Affairs and Director, International Services, stated: “ACPE is pleased to be able to collaborate with PSI.  This partnership strengthens ACPE’s ability to learn from and share ideas and resources with PSI. The organisations are committed to cooperating and engaging in activities that focus on strengthening pharmacy education to meet local needs for pharmacy services and improve patient care through safe and effective medication use.”
