Superintendent Pharmacists

The Pharmacy Act 2007 established the role of the superintendent pharmacist. The management and administration of the sale and supply of medicines is under the personal control of the superintendent pharmacist, who is essentially the person in overall control of the management of a pharmacy, including its professional and clinical management.

A superintendent pharmacist can act in respect of more than one pharmacy, ie, all pharmacies within a company/chain and must have a minimum of 3 years’ post-registration experience.

Resources

In order to promote an understanding of the legal requirement for a superintendent pharmacist and the responsibilities of superintendent pharmacists the PSI has developed a number of resources:

Nominating a Superintendent Pharmacist

Part of the registration requirements for pharmacies is the appointment of a superintendent pharmacist and a supervising pharmacist. When the holder of either of these roles changes, the appropriate appointment form must be completed and returned to the PSI immediately, with the associated fee.

The PSI welcomes queries from superintendent pharmacists on any matter of concern in relation to their role and responsibilities. All queries should be sent in writing to info@psi.ie
