New Pharmacy Openings

Inspections are carried out under Section 19 of the Pharmacy Act 2007 following receipt of an application for registration for:

  • A new pharmacy opening
  • A pharmacy that has changed ownership (which needs to register as a new retail pharmacy business as a change in ownership cancels the registration of a pharmacy)
  • A relocation of an existing pharmacy
  • A pharmacy that has applied for continued registration

These inspections are notified in advance of being carried out.

The PSI has prepared a checklist to assist pharmacy owners and pharmacists to prepare for a ‘new opening’ inspection.

Pharmacists and pharmacy owners should also be familiar with the Regulation of Retail Pharmacy Businesses Regulations 2008 and the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (Registration) (Retail Pharmacy Businesses) Rules 2008.
